“What does Racing With Diabetes mean to you?”
It’s a powerful message of hope and inspiration, reaching a number of people affected by diabetes. When I was diagnosed 9 years ago (at age 16), a doctor and my own thoughts believed my racing career was over. I was embarrassed telling teens and coaches, because I didn’t want to be treated differently or held back from opportunities.
I never wished for it, but in time, I grew from it and began to believe that sometimes, everything did happen for a reason. I realize how fortunate I am to have the support and resources to manage my diabetes on and off the bike.
Today, I’m racing worldwide, having the honor to represent Team Novo Nordisk and USA Cycling/Team USA. I proudly ride with the hashtag #RacingWithDiabetes on my top tube to inspire and empower people affected by diabetes, to let them know they’re not alone. We are all in this together, to raise awareness, find a cure and never stop pursuing our dreams.
